Why Social-Emotional Learning Matters Now More Than Ever? Introducing Our New SED-RG Blog

When thinking about the events of the last year, saying that they were peculiar would be a big understatement. Practically overnight, we found ourselves unable to leave our homes, scared of the many unknowns about our present—and our future, and more importantly, forced to cope with a new reality. For many of us, this new reality included learning how to use Zoom, staying in touch with family and friends only through text or voice-calls, attending work and/or school virtually, and struggling with being confined to the same space for weeks on end. In fact, as I write these words, I am sitting in the same space, looking out the same windows, I have been since last March. So, why start an online journal about Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) now?

It is certainly not magic, but there is plenty of research evidence showing SEL works!

SEL cultivates social and emotional competencies that help us—students and everyone beyond any educational settings—acquire and apply knowledge, skills, and attitudes that can boost our personal, academic, and/or professional development (CASEL, 2015; Durlak et al., 2015). In addition, SEL supports our development while simultaneously promoting positive interpersonal relationships. It sure sounds impressive, but how does it work? In short, SEL helps us by strengthening our self-awareness (e.g., understand our emotions, goals, values), our self-management (e.g., manage our feelings, thoughts, actions), our social awareness (e.g., empathize, feel compassion), our relationship skills (e.g., maintain healthy relationships), and our responsible decision making (e.g., make constructive choices; CASEL, 2015; Durlak et al., 2015). It is certainly not magic, but there is plenty of research evidence showing SEL works!

Not surprisingly, by strengthening these competencies, we would be able to favourably navigate many life events, including this new reality still unfolding. That is, by improving our self-awareness, our self-management, our social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making, these changes could be a bit easier on us. This new online journal will be dedicated to this, and many other topics related to SEL.

To this extent, this will mainly be a student-led online journal. However, we do not discourage other voices beyond the student body or even outside academia. In fact, we would like to invite everyone that wants to be a part of our journal to get in touch. If it is related to SEL, we would love to have your input! We welcome all questions and comments and accept entries in both English and French. Do not hesitate to contact us if you are interested to know more (i.e., requirements, word limit, etc.). We hope you enjoy our SED-RG blog!
